What the job involved

Mercedes clear coat is genuinely hard, which is good news for the owner and slow news for the detailer. It resists swirling from ordinary washing better than most finishes, but when defects do appear they take a longer working cycle and a more capable pad to remove. The temptation on hard clear is to jump straight to an aggressive combination; the better path is a moderate cut worked longer and checked frequently, because hard paint also means any correction you overshoot is expensive to walk back.

The gloss black window surrounds and grille elements on this body style behave nothing like the paint. They scratch under light pressure, hold swirls visibly, and are usually where a car in otherwise good shape shows its age. Those panels get treated as separate surfaces with their own media and their own protection.

Panel gaps and badge edges are the third element. Compact German bodies have tight shutlines that trap wash residue, and product drying in a gap leaves a white line visible from several feet away. The finish work here is largely about extraction: compressed air through the gaps, badge edges detailed by hand, and a final pass under angled light looking specifically for residue rather than for paint defects.
