Two playbooks in this market

Most detail shops in the Triangle pick one of two playbooks. Playbook one is the tunnel-wash assembly line with a "detail" tacked on. Brushes that swirl your paint, detergents that strip whatever protection was on it, a 20-minute interior wipe they're calling a full detail. Playbook two is the ceramic coating shop that quotes over the phone and assigns the job to whoever's on the floor that day. The cars come out looking fine for a month. The customers find out at month four.

How we work differently

We started this because we figured your car deserved the same thinking we'd give our own. So the process is closer to how a doctor works than how a car wash works. Walk-around first, in person, at the side of the car with you. Treatment plan in writing. Cost in writing. What we'll do and what we won't. You decide. Then the work happens at your home or your office lot while you keep moving with your day. Same standard on every job. Same crew. No outsourcing.

Prep is the job
A ceramic coating is hardness layered on paint that has to be perfect first. Skip the wash, the iron decon, the clay, the polish, or the IPA wipedown, and the coating bonds to contamination instead of paint. Swirls show through the gloss by month six. So we run every prep step in full, every job. There isn't a fast version.

Diagnosis before quote
Ceramic coating quotes don't happen over the phone here. Paint correction quotes don't happen without seeing the paint. Walk-around is free and runs about 15 minutes. The treatment plan that follows is fixed for the scope we walked. If something new surfaces during the work, you hear about it first.

Tell the truth on ROI
If a job won't pay back, we say so. Trading in next year? Skip the ceramic. Lease return at 18 months? Wax does the job, not a long-term coating. A good doctor recommends the right treatment for the problem, not the most expensive one they can defend. Same idea here.

No tunnel-wash shortcuts
Hand wash. The careful way is the only way that doesn't accumulate paint damage over years. Yes, it takes longer. Yes, the quote reflects that. The other path is buying back five years of swirl marks at every wash.

UV and heat

Roughly four months a year you'll see 90-plus afternoons here. UV index hits 9 or 10 on a clear July day. Paint that lives outside takes a measurable hit every season. Sealants flash off faster. Carnauba wax melts off the panel inside a month once summer settles in. So the chemistry we run is UV-stable across the board, with reapplication intervals built around NC sun.

Pollen and tree sap

Wake and Durham counties grow oaks, pines, and tulip poplars in tight canopy. Spring pollen coats every vehicle for six to eight weeks. Summer sap drops on parked cars year-round. Both are acidic on the clear coat if they sit. Quarterly decon isn't a luxury here. It's what keeps the paint surface honest. We size the wash schedule to your specific street and tree mix.

Brine and freeze-thaw

NC DOT pre-treats every winter weather event with brine. We get less salt than the mountains, but enough that undercarriage neglect turns into visible corrosion inside three to five years. A salt rinse after each brine event, plus an undercarriage flush in early spring, keeps frame rust from showing up at the resale inspection.

Humidity and interior

Average summer humidity sits at 70 percent or higher for months at a stretch. Interiors that pick up moisture (wet floor mats after a soccer practice, an AC condensate leak you didn't notice, a spilled drink that got under the seat) grow mold faster here than they would in dry climates. So we carry an antimicrobial treatment standard. Not just for visibly wet cars.

What does a clay bar actually do?

Run your hand over clean paint after washing. If it feels like sandpaper instead of glass, you have bonded contamination. Tree sap, industrial fallout, brake dust embedded in the clear coat.

Why does paint protection film bubble?

During the first 24 to 72 hours after install, small water bubbles under PPF are normal. They evaporate through the film. Persistent bubbles after a week mean trapped contamination, edge lift, or incorrect installation.

What does 9h ceramic coating mean?

9H is the pencil hardness rating of the coating. Hardness is measured by which pencil grade scratches the cured coating. 9H is the hardest standard pencil grade. A real performance claim but commonly overused in marketing.

Why do detailers use paint thickness gauges?

A paint thickness gauge measures the clear coat in microns. Factory clear coat is typically 50 to 80 microns. Polishing removes 1 to 3 microns per pass.

Will trim restoration coating stain my paint?

Quality products applied properly do not stain paint. Cheap dressings migrate as they break down and stain. We use water-based trim coatings that cure fully and stay on the trim.

Should I wax or coat my wheels?

Wheel-specific ceramic coating is significantly better than wax for wheels. Lasts 12-24 months vs 4-6 weeks for wax. Reduces brake dust adhesion dramatically. Makes weekly wheel cleaning a 5-minute job instead of 30 minutes.
