The NC Detailing Calendar
What to do for your car each month in North Carolina. Pollen, sun, salt, leaf tannins, humidity — every season has a different problem. Here is the schedule we follow.
January — Salt and grime month
Mountain salt and brine compounds collect from winter road treatments. The Raleigh area gets less than the mountains, but enough that undercarriage damage starts now if you ignore it.
Do this month: undercarriage rinse every 2-3 weeks if you have driven mountain roads. Foam wash with a focus on lower body panels. Avoid tunnel washes — the alkaline detergents combined with road salt eat clear coat.
February — Pre-pollen prep
Pollen season starts in March. February is when you set the car up to survive it.
Do this month: full exterior detail, sealant or fresh wax. The protected paint sheds pollen instead of bonding to it. Check wiper blades — pollen plus a worn blade is what creates the streaky etched pattern that takes weeks to clear.
March-May — Pollen season
This is the worst time of year for paint in NC. Pine and oak pollen forms a thick yellow film. Left alone, pollen mixed with morning dew creates a mild acid that etches clear coat.
Do these months: rinse the car at least every 3 days during peak (mid-April). Foam wash weekly. Do NOT brush dry pollen off — the pollen grains scratch. Always rinse first.
For coated cars: pH-neutral car soap only. A ceramic-friendly maintenance booster every 3-4 weeks restores beading.
June-August — Sun and bird droppings
NC summer UV is brutal. Coated and waxed cars lose performance fast in direct heat above 95°F. Bird droppings now bake on within minutes — the acid in fresh droppings etches clear coat in under an hour if not removed.
Do these months: wash every 2 weeks minimum. Carry a quick-detailer in the trunk to remove bird droppings before they bake. Park in shade when you can. Interior UV protectant on the dash to prevent cracking.
For ceramic-coated cars: a hot-month maintenance wash with iron remover keeps the coating performing through summer.
September-October — Leaf tannins
Fallen leaves on a wet hood release tannins (brown stains) that etch into clear coat over 48-72 hours. The Raleigh area has a lot of oaks, which makes this worse than most places.
Do these months: never leave wet leaves on the car overnight. Rinse the car after every rain if leaves were on it. Pre-winter exterior detail mid-October — sealant or ceramic maintenance pass.
November-December — Pre-holiday detail
Pre-holiday is one of our busiest detailing periods — owners want the car presentable for family visits and end-of-year photos. Interior detailing demand peaks here too.
Do these months: book the holiday detail by mid-November. Interior deep clean before family travel. Leather conditioner before the cold dries seats out. Headlight restoration if foggy — winter dark hours are when you notice it.
The two big NC realities most people get wrong
- NC humidity is harder on cars than the temperature. Warmer-than-the-Northeast but constantly damp means water spots are perpetual. Stay ahead of them with sealant or ceramic.
- Pollen does the most damage of any single annual event. A protected car shrugs it off. An unprotected car gets micro-etched and never quite looks the same. The pre-pollen detail in February is the cheapest investment in long-term paint health you can make.
