This is the most common car we work on in the Triangle, and the most common condition: a commuter with real mileage, a clean interior, and paint carrying two or three years of highway film its owner stopped noticing. The change on a car like this is usually larger than the owner expects.
What the job involved
Commuter miles leave a specific signature. The nose and mirror faces take bug strikes and stone rash, the lower doors and rockers carry tar and road film from wet pavement, and the horizontal surfaces hold a flat gray haze that reads as fading but is usually just bonded contamination. Almost none of that comes off with soap.
So the job runs chemically before it runs mechanically. Bug residue is dissolved rather than scrubbed, since dried insect remains are acidic and abrasive and scrubbing them grinds the shells into the clear coat. Tar spots get a solvent on a soft towel. Iron fallout gets a dedicated remover. Only after all of that does the surface get evaluated for whether polishing is warranted at all, and on a well-kept daily driver it often is not.
Honda clear coat is on the softer side, which means a car like this shows wash marring from years of quick washes but also responds to a single light polishing stage. The finishing decision is about protection: a daily driver that lives outside and racks up highway miles benefits more from a durable sealant with real UV stability than from a show-car wax that looks superb for three weeks and then is gone. The measure of success here is that the next several washes take half the effort.
