What the job involved

The unpainted plastic cladding is what decides whether a 4Runner looks maintained or tired. NC sun grays textured black trim faster than it fades paint, and once it chalks, a wipe-on dressing sits on the surface for a week and rinses straight off. The durable approach is to deep-clean the trim first, dry it completely, then apply a cure-type restorer that bonds rather than coats. That step changes the look of the whole vehicle more than polishing the paint does.

Roof rails and the crossbar mounts are the second area that separates a thorough job from a quick one. Grit collects in the mounting channels and stays wet, which is where corrosion starts on a vehicle that spends its life outdoors. Those get flushed and dried rather than wiped.

The paint itself is straightforward. Toyota clear coat is moderately soft, so it marrs readily but also corrects easily without aggressive cutting. On an SUV with this much vertical panel area, the practical constraint is reach: the upper surfaces of the roof and the top of the hatch are where UV damage concentrates and where most maintenance washes never properly get. We work top-down in sections and finish with a protection layer chosen for horizontal-surface UV load, because that is where a vehicle like this fails first.
