Is engine bay cleaning safe?
Done right, yes. Done wrong (high pressure into a connector, hot engine and cold water, no covers on sensitive components), no. Modern engines are designed for rain. They are not designed for a pressure washer aimed at the ECU.

When to pick something else.
Skip the cleaning on race vehicles with exposed electronics, classic cars with open distributors, or anything with visible wiring damage. Better to clean by hand-wiping than to risk water intrusion.

Will water hit the alternator damage it?
At low pressure with the engine cool, generally no — alternators are sealed. At high pressure aimed directly at the brushes, yes.
How often should I clean my engine bay?
Twice a year is plenty. More often if you live somewhere with road salt or heavy pollen.
Cold engine or warm?
Cool to the touch. Not hot. Not cold-soaked frozen. Hot engine plus cold water cracks plastic intake parts.
