Gradual — paint fades 1-5% per year under normal conditions. NC sun + parking outside can accelerate this to 8-15% per year. Visible fading usually means 3+ years of accumulated damage. Sudden fading (within months) usually means contamination — bird droppings, sap, road tar that has been there long enough to permanently etch. Sudden looking fading is often gradual that finally became visible.
