A dual-action (DA) polisher moves in a random orbital pattern. Forgiving — hard to burn paint, slow to remove material. A rotary polisher spins continuously. Faster cutting, but generates heat that can burn through clear coat in seconds if mishandled. Most consumer DIY corrections use a DA. Most pro shops use both — rotary for heavy correction, DA for finishing. Beginners should always start with DA.
