Do boats need different wax than cars?
Yes. Gelcoat is more porous than automotive clear coat and lives under harder UV, so it needs marine-grade sealants built for that surface. Car wax on a boat looks good for a couple of weeks and then quietly disappears.
Automotive waxes are formulated for clear coat: a hard, non-porous surface that shields the color underneath. Gelcoat is the opposite, a pigmented resin with open pores and no clear layer, sitting in reflected water glare that roughly doubles its UV exposure.
Marine sealants are built heavier for exactly that job, bonding into the pores and holding gloss through a season instead of a month. On our boat details the protection step is always marine-specific chemistry. The result you should expect: water beading through the season, less scum adhesion at the waterline, and a hull that washes clean with a rinse instead of a scrub.
