How do you remove waterline stains from a hull?
Waterline scum and yellow-brown staining come off with a dedicated hull cleaner that dissolves the mineral and organic deposits, followed by neutralizing, polishing, and sealing the area so the next season wipes off easier.
The brown mustache at the waterline is a mix of tannin from lake water, minerals, and algae residue. Falls Lake and Jordan Lake water both leave it, and scrubbing alone will not shift it because the stain sits in the gelcoat pores.
Our process: apply a purpose-made hull cleaner that releases the deposits chemically, rinse and neutralize it, then machine polish the waterline band because stained areas are usually lightly oxidized underneath. A sealant over the finished surface makes a real difference to how the line looks by mid-summer. We do this work on the trailer with the boat out of the water.
