Is hand washing better than a drive-through wash?
For the paint, yes. Tunnel brushes carry grit from every car before yours and drag it across your clear coat. A proper hand wash uses fresh mitts, two buckets, and a grit guard so dirt leaves the panel without being ground back in.
Most of the swirl marks we correct did not come from neglect. They came from years of brush tunnels and gas-station brushes. Under direct sun you see them as a spiderweb pattern across the hood and doors.
Our exterior detail starts with a pre-rinse and foam soak so grit floats off before anything touches the panel, then a two-bucket hand wash with clean mitts. It is slower than a tunnel, which is the point. The paint on a car that has only ever been hand washed reads noticeably clearer at trade-in, and that difference is exactly what a used-car appraiser is looking at.

A touchless tunnel wash in winter is fine for knocking brine off the undercarriage between details. It is the spinning-brush tunnels that swirl paint.
