What causes swirl marks and how do you prevent them?

Swirls are thousands of micro-scratches from dirt being dragged across paint: brush tunnels, dry wiping, dirty wash mitts, even a jacket zipper leaning over a fender. Prevention is clean wash technique and a sacrificial protection layer.

Every swirl mark is the same story: a hard particle moved across the paint under pressure. The fix is to control how anything touches the panel. Rinse before washing so loose grit leaves first. Keep wash media clean with a two-bucket setup. Dry with plush towels or air instead of dragging a chamois.

Protection matters too. A sealant or coating does not make paint scratch-proof, but it lowers surface friction so contact does less damage, and it makes the car release dirt with less scrubbing in the first place.
