A cutting pad (wool or stiff foam) removes deeper scratches. A polishing pad (medium foam) refines and removes light marring. A finishing pad (soft foam) jewels the gloss. Wrong pad with wrong polish either burns paint or does nothing. Most consumer paint corrections use a polishing pad with a one-step compound — covers 90% of light-to-moderate swirls.
