A paint thickness gauge measures the clear coat in microns. Factory clear coat is typically 50 to 80 microns. Polishing removes 1 to 3 microns per pass. A gauge tells the detailer how much can safely be removed before the clear coat is too thin to protect the base. Reputable detailers gauge every panel before polishing. Spots showing 30 microns or less get hand-finishing only — machine compounding would burn through.
